Making Of – Moon Cover
Extraordinary images.
Unique locations, breathtaking landscapes, artistic vision, creative ideas, thrilling action or simply capturing the sense of flow and joy of biking.
Images.
One of my greatest passions.
They depict real-life experiences, yet at the same time leave room for imagination and dreams.
You can gaze at them for hours and reflect on the world around them.
You can look at them again and again and discover something new every time.
Images.
Special images.
Images that are worth looking at.
That are worth appreciating.
That are worth being shown in the media or even printed.
Images like this cover.
Top shots.
Something you can’t necessarily expect right away from every shoot or every project.
They come about in one way or another.
They either happen happily and spontaneously while traveling, during projects, or within a shoot—the so-called lucky shots—or they are planned well in advance and emerge through a lengthy, labor-intensive but yet highly interesting process.
This shot here belongs to the latter category.
A creative idea, a clear vision, the planning, the shoot, the organization and the execution of the print or the creative paper cut.
In the case of this particular shot we’re talking about a process that took more than six months and involved several people in both the process and the final product.
I first brought up the idea of turning a silhouette riding shot into a cutout print during a personal conversation with LINES Magazine in mid-2025.
From that moment on I couldn’t get the idea out of my head. I was determined to make it happen.
But how?
And which shot, which setting would be best suited for it?
And then the idea struck!
A shot with the moon in the background.
But it had to be something special.
During my research, however, it quickly became clear: it had to be the Beaver Moon.
Beaver Moon.
The biggest moon of the year.
The brightest supermoon of 2025, reaching its maximum brightness on November 5th.
But where would be the best place not only to see it clearly, but also to capture it well in combination with the bike?
Fortunately, it was supposed to be particularly visible and large right in Premantura, Istria. An area I’ve visited several times by bike and therefore know well.
From then on it was clear: We’d be heading there for a few days in early November.
Perfect for a nice end to the season—a bit of biking and enjoying the scenery—but mainly to capture that one shot I couldn’t get out of my head.
Moon watching, location scouting, test shots, and a bit of luck with the weather for November 5th.
Day 1:
Day 2:
“Okay, we’ll do it right over there tomorrow!”
And when the time finally came, we were rewarded.
Everything went perfectly—and it had to. The window of opportunity is narrow with a project like this, and everything had to fall into place at just the right moment.
But just getting the shot in the can wasn’t enough.
Would the shot go over well and would LINES Magazine be interested in working on our joint idea with this shot?
After investing a lot of work, effort, and money up front, I received immediate positive feedback. A moment of relief. An important step towards exactly the final product I had been hoping for.
Now it was out of my hands.
It was up to LINES to assess the feasibility.
To figure out whether a silhouette cut could be implemented in print and whether it might even work on the cover.
Some time passed. I waited impatiently for a response, hoping for a positive one.
And then the news came.
It was feasible and the team at LINES Magazine was willing to turn the creative idea into reality.
How awesome was that?!
When the finished cover arrived at my home I was overwhelmed.
My creative heart truly beat faster as I took it out of the packaging and opened it for the first time.
It was a long process, but it culminated in a final product that couldn’t have been better.
Absolutely perfect, especially paired with the high-quality double-cover binding that LINES Magazine is known for.
Simply awesome!
But somehow it still wasn’t quite the satisfying conclusion I had expected for myself—or rather deep down inside.
Something was still missing.
The circle needed to be complete.
But what was still missing?
Wasn’t that exactly what I wanted?
Yes, it was!
But one thing was still missing from this creative process.
Something that might seem ridiculous or silly to some.
But for me it was important.
Important for being able to wrap up this project 100% perfectly.
The finished cover had to go back exactly where it was created.
I wanted to close the circle in a way I had never done before.
No sooner said than done.
We traveled back to Premantura to shoot the final print.
Exactly where we had shot the original image.
And here we go:
An idea.
A project.
An image.
A work of art.
